How to Measure Your Dog for Clothing

A well-fitting garment should feel like nothing at all to your dog. It should allow free movement, sit comfortably at the neck and never pinch under the legs. Taking a few careful measurements before you buy makes all the difference.

You will need a soft fabric measuring tape, a few treats and a calm moment when your dog is relaxed.

The three key measurements

Neck

Measure around the base of the neck, where a collar would naturally sit. Keep the tape snug but not tight.

Chest girth

Measure around the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. This is usually the most important measurement for choosing a size.

Back length

Measure from the base of the neck, between the shoulder blades, to the base of the tail. This helps you understand how far a garment will extend along the body.

How to measure accurately

1. Ask your dog to stand on all four legs on a flat surface.
2. Keep the tape flat against the coat without pulling it tight.
3. Slip two fingers under the tape to allow room for comfort and movement.
4. Measure twice and note each figure in both centimetres and inches.
5. Reward your dog with praise or a treat as you go.

Helpful things to keep in mind

• Fluffy or double-coated dogs may need a little extra room for their fur.
• Deep-chested breeds can measure larger at the chest than their length suggests.
• Puppies grow quickly, so re-measure every few weeks.
• If your dog falls between two sizes, the larger size is often more comfortable.
