Dog Clothing Size Guide

Sizing dog clothing can feel uncertain, especially when you are shopping online. Breeds vary enormously in shape, so a size label is only a starting point. This guide explains how sizes generally work and how to choose with confidence.

Before you begin, take your dog's neck, chest girth and back length measurements. Chest girth is usually the most important figure.

General size ranges

The ranges below are approximate and based on chest girth. They are intended as a general reference only.

• XS: approximately 25 to 33 cm (10 to 13 in), often suited to toy breeds and young puppies.
• S: approximately 33 to 43 cm (13 to 17 in), often suited to small breeds.
• M: approximately 43 to 53 cm (17 to 21 in), often suited to small to medium breeds.
• L: approximately 53 to 66 cm (21 to 26 in), often suited to medium breeds.
• XL: approximately 66 to 81 cm (26 to 32 in), often suited to medium to large breeds.

Always check the product size chart

Different styles are cut differently. A fitted knit will sit closer to the body than a relaxed puffer coat, and stretch fabrics allow more give than woven ones. Each product page includes its own size chart, and that chart should always be your final reference.

Choosing between two sizes

1. Check which measurement falls outside the smaller size range.
2. If it is the chest, choose the larger size for comfort.
3. Consider your dog's coat, as thick fur needs extra room.
4. Think about layering, as outerwear worn over a knit may need more space.

Signs of a good fit

• You can slide two fingers comfortably under the neck and chest.
• Your dog can walk, sit and lie down without restriction.
• The garment does not rub under the front legs.
• The length sits comfortably, without covering the tail base.
