How to Choose the Right Dog Bed
The right bed is shaped by how your dog sleeps, not just how big they are. Here is a simple way to find the one that suits them.

Dogs spend a large part of the day resting, so their bed is one of the most important things you will choose for them. A good bed offers support, a sense of security and a place that is entirely their own.
Rather than starting with colour or style, start with your dog. Watch how they sleep, where they like to settle and what they reach for when they want comfort.
Observe how your dog sleeps
Sleeping posture is the most useful clue. Most dogs fall into one of a few habits, and each suits a different shape of bed.
- Curlers tuck into a ball and often enjoy round beds with raised, bolstered edges to lean against.
- Stretchers sprawl out on their side and are usually happiest on a flat, rectangular bed or mattress.
- Leaners rest their head on a sofa arm or wall, so a bed with one or more bolsters works well.
- Burrowers like to tuck under blankets and may appreciate a bed with a soft, enclosing shape.
Get the size right
Measure your dog from nose to the base of the tail while they are lying stretched out, then add roughly 15 to 25 cm for comfortable room. For round beds, measure your dog curled up and allow a little extra space around them.
A bed that is too small can feel cramped, while one that is much too large may not give a smaller dog the cosy, held feeling many enjoy.
Think about support and age
Puppies, adult dogs and senior dogs have different needs. Older or larger dogs often benefit from a thicker, supportive base that does not flatten quickly. If your dog has joint stiffness or mobility concerns, speak with your veterinarian about the type of support that would suit them best.
Ease of getting in and out
Low entry points and gently sloping edges make it easier for senior dogs and small breeds to step in without effort.
Choose materials you can live with
- A removable, washable cover makes regular cleaning simple.
- Durable, tightly woven fabrics stand up better to digging and scratching.
- Breathable materials help in warmer rooms and seasons.
- A non-slip base keeps the bed in place on tiled or wooden floors.
