How to Keep Your Dog Comfortable in Winter

Winter brings crisp mornings and cosy evenings, but colder weather can be uncomfortable for many dogs. Small, short-coated, senior and very young dogs often feel the chill most.

A few thoughtful adjustments to your dog's routine can help them enjoy the season in comfort.

Create a warm place to rest

• Move the bed away from cold floors, doors and draughty windows.
• Choose a bed with raised edges that help hold warmth.
• Add a soft blanket your dog can burrow into.
• Let your dog enjoy patches of winter sun indoors.

Layer up when it helps

A well-fitted sweater or coat can make outdoor time more comfortable for dogs who feel the cold. Thick double-coated breeds often need little extra, while short-coated and small breeds may benefit more. Remove layers indoors so your dog does not overheat.

Adjust your walks

1. Walk during the warmer part of the day where possible.
2. Keep walks shorter on especially cold or foggy days.
3. Use reflective accessories when visibility is low.
4. Dry your dog thoroughly if they come home damp.

Caring for paws

Cold, dry air can leave paw pads feeling rough. Wipe paws after walks and check between the toes. If you notice cracking, soreness or limping, consult your veterinarian.

Watch for signs of cold

Shivering, lifting paws, seeking warm spots or reluctance to walk can mean your dog is feeling the cold. Bring them somewhere warm, and contact your veterinarian if you are concerned, particularly with senior dogs or those with health conditions.
