How to Choose Clothing for Your Cat

Many cats are perfectly happy without clothing. For those who benefit from a soft layer, comfort and patience matter most.

Cats are independent, sensitive to touch and particular about their comfort. Clothing is not a necessity for most cats, and many prefer to go without. For some, such as hairless breeds or cats who feel the cold, a soft, light layer can be a welcome addition.

If you are considering clothing for your cat, let their comfort guide every decision.

Does your cat need clothing?

A healthy cat with a full coat usually regulates their temperature well on their own. Clothing may be more helpful for hairless cats, very short-coated cats or those living in cool, air-conditioned spaces. For hairless, senior or unwell cats, speak with your veterinarian first about whether clothing is suitable.

Choose comfort above all

  • Soft, lightweight and breathable fabrics such as cotton or fine knits.
  • A gentle stretch that allows natural movement.
  • Simple designs without loose ties, buttons or small decorations.
  • A fit that leaves the legs, tail and litter area completely free.

Introduce clothing gradually

  1. Let your cat sniff and explore the garment before trying it on.
  2. Choose a calm moment, perhaps after a meal or play.
  3. Start with just a minute or two, with gentle praise and a treat.
  4. Slowly increase the time only if your cat stays relaxed.
  5. Remove it straight away if your cat seems stressed.

Reading your cat's signals

Freezing, hiding, flattened ears, a low crouch or repeated attempts to wriggle free are signs that your cat is uncomfortable. Respect these signals. Some cats simply do not enjoy clothing, and that is entirely fine.

Safety comes first

Never leave your cat unattended while they are wearing clothing. Garments can catch on furniture or restrict movement in ways you might not expect. Check the fit regularly and keep wear time short, especially in warm weather.
